In my opinion, there is no best kind, type or genre of music. Music is not meant to be categorized under specific divisions in which individuals limit themselves to listening. I believe a song is music if it makes you feel something, which therefore may encompass a broad spectrum of sources. I enjoy listening to an extreme range of songs. A few of my favorite rap artists include Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino and A$APferg, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy listening to classical music like Beethoven's 9th Symphony or Moonlight Sonata. And, I can't help but love all of One Direction's music.
Recently, my friend sent me a link to a song called Circles by Machineheart (feat. Vanic). I cannot describe how the lyrics seemed to correspond with many of my life thoughts. Vanic is the producer and Machineheart is the LA band that sings what people categorize as an indie pop song.
The lyrics are below:

CIRCLES Vanic x Machineheart
If you’re looking for a diamond
You gotta sift through the gold
If you’re searching for a way out
You gotta take a new road
If you don’t keep the motion movin’
It can all feel the same
In the heart of the city
Where the streets are the veins
Oh, when I’m running low
Oh, when the rivers dry
Oh, can you help me go on?
[Chorus]
One more time
We’re gonna get up for this
We’re never gonna
Run and hide
If I get tired and say that I wanna
Change my mind
Pull me in a circle, so I can change it
One more time,
Pull me in a circle
Pull me in a circle
Oh, I know this is heavy
Like a weight on your back
But I think that we can carry,
Carry on ’till the last
And we’re laughing and crying oceans
At the smallest of things
But it feels so much better
When we find the release!
Oh, like a broken light
Oh, in the blackest night
Oh, can you flip the switch on?
[Chorus]
One more time
We’re gonna get up for this
We’re never gonna
Run and hide
If I get tired and say that I wanna
Change my mind
Pull me in a circle, so I can change it
One more time,
Pull me in a circle
Pull me in a circle
I don’t know where I’m going,
but I know where I’ve been
And it’s never in the nowhere
It’s in the not giving in
And when the Earth is slipping, tripping
Right underneath our feet
Remember we’re that not finished
We’re not finished!
We’re not finished!
One more time
We’re gonna get up for this
We’re never gonna
Run and hide
If I get tired and say that I wanna
Change my mind
Pull me in a circle, so I can change it
One more time,
Pull me in a circle
Pull me in a circle
Pull me in a circle
Pull me in a circle
The lyrics "If you’re looking for a diamond, You gotta sift through the gold. If you’re searching for a way out, You gotta take a new road" remind me that sometimes I focus too much on one very specific goal in life and my world becomes completely narrowed by it. If I were able to open up and look at the bigger picture and try a new or different way then maybe I might find something with potential that is worth so much more to me. Since the age of seven, I've always had one focus and dream which was to become a doctor. These few years in high school have taught me that perhaps there are so many fields of gold to ponder through., and maybe once choice will be a way out of my narrow-mindedness and allow me to take a new path in my life There are days that I feel just as the lyrics state "Oh, when I’m running low. Oh, when the rivers dry. Oh, can you help me go on?" and not only do I question the future, but I even begin to question the source of my existence.
I have come to the conclusion that as I continue along my path of life, it is inevitable that I will fall down and feel so alone and in the dark which relates to this figurative statement "can you flip the switch on?", but as the song states "one more time, we're gonna get up for this." Sometimes the only boost that I need in the face of trouble is to tell myself that all I have to do is get up one more time. The lyrics "pull me in a circle" repeat throughout the song and remain continuously impactful to me. Metaphorically, our lives are just one big circle. We go through repeated motions in our daily lives and this remains the same from day to day to weeks to months to sometimes even years. There are times when we will get stuck in the circle or even pulled out of the loop, but in the end the circle of life remains in motion and we just have to "keep the motion movin'."
The lyrics that I relate to the most in this whole song is "I don’t know where I’m going,
but I know where I’ve been." One late night, my friend and I were discussing how easily misunderstood people are. The facade that others see don't exactly mirror our past, the future or how we feel inside. In the end, despite the judgment of others, we must rely on what we know about ourselves to pave the way for the uncertainty of the future.
In my opinion, this song is really quite beautiful and can be interpreted in a variety of ways. My personal understanding should by no means bias what you take out of the song. Enjoy!
